Slopes Opening Early – it’s Snow Joke

Australia’s favourite winter playground, Perisher, has today announced it will open Saturday 2 June thanks to the heavy early snowfalls, low temperatures and continued snow-making.

One week ahead of the official opening; Perisher plans to open Front Valley for skiing and snowboarding, making it the first Australian resort to kick off the 2012 winter season.

Following the success of last year’s pre-season opening, all the proceeds from the ticket sales from the 2nd and 3rd of June will be donated to the local community, with the aim of smashing the $20,000 raised for various charities in 2011. In 2011 Perisher made the donations after its Facebook fans voted where they would like to see the money go.

“We are really excited for a great 2012 winter season and we can’t wait to share all of the improvements we’ve made to the resort with our guests. We’re also really happy to be supporting the local community by, once again, donating Saturday and Sunday’s ticket proceeds” says Perisher’s CEO Peter Brulisauer.

It just started snowing here at Alpine Habtiats and thre is forecast more to come. Resort cameras show things starting to get white!

• An unspectacular start to the season, but at least it now looks like it will be a bit cooler than normal and not too bad for snow-making.
• The first big 30cm+ storm to occur in late June/early July (assuming the low this weekend doesn’t throw up a big surprise).
• Spencer’s Creek snow depth to break one metre by mid-to-late July, and to top out at 201cm.

The hills across from Alpine Habtiats got a dusting of snow yesterday afternoon and it looks like there might be some more yet!

Brindabella Airlines to fly to Snowy Mountains this ski season

Brindabella Airlines and Aeropelican (who formerly flew Sydney to Snowy Mountains) have annouced a merger and advised that flights will resume starting 8th June 2012 which is fantastic news. This means that our guests will be able to fly from Sydney to Snowy Mountains Airport, south of Cooma, in less than an hour. Cars can be hired from the Airport to get yourself to Alpine Habitats.

In the joint press release, Brindabella Airlines and Aeropelican said “Starting on the 8th June 2012 the service will see 20 weekly flights, six days a week servicing the Snowy Mountains region during the busiest part of the year. Fabrice Binet, Chief Commercial Officer of the Canberra based airline group commented: “For our third winter operation we are offering flights as early as the 8th June 2012 to accommodate the early winter school holiday calendar; in addition we are committing to apply a similar fare policy to contribute to the competitiveness of the Snowy Mountains winter holiday product.”
