Snowshoe Snowy Mountains

Snowshoeing has been around for thousands of years however was used more out of necessity than recreation.  It is basically like bushwalking but doing it in the snow and using some specially made “shoes” to get you above the snow.  These days snowshoeing is increasing in popularity as a recreational sport.  They can take you places and give views that skiing or convention walking can’t.  Snowshoeing can be done anywhere there is snow and in the Snowy Mountains and Kosciuszko National Park (http:// www NULL.nationalparks NULL.nsw NULL.gov NULL.au/parks NULL.nsf/ )there is hectares of terrain to do your walking.  Alpine Habitats is the perfect place to stay to have yourself centrally positioned to do your snowshoeing.

Anyone who can walk can do snow shoeing, which is a bonus for those who come to the NSW Snowy Mountains in winter, and are not adventurous enough to ski.  You can set off in a group or hire a snowshoeing guide (http://www NULL.mountainadventurecentre NULL.com NULL.au/shop/)but unless you are experienced in the back country you should probably not go it alone.  In all cases the weather in the alpine areas can change both quickly and dramatically.  For this reason you should get a weather update and be prepared for any changes.

Getting on snowshoes is a great way to get yourself to Mount Kosciusko.  The snow can hang around well after the ski season closes so you can walk up when the weather is warmer and the days are longer.  There are many other snowshoeing walks like Thredbo to Deadhorse Gap or Charlotte’s Pass to Thredbo or walking out to one of the Rams Heads from Thredbo.  K7 Adventures will be able to guide you on your snow shoeing adventure (http://www NULL.k7adventures NULL.com/)and they have some other walks you could try.
