snowy mountains fishingThe Snowy Mountains is renowned for some of the best trout fishing in Australia.  There are many streams, rivers and impoundments stocked with trout just waiting to take you bait lure or fly.  When staying at Alpine Habitats you will be able to stay in luxury while having all this at your disposal.

The Thredbo River and Snowy River are both world class trout fishing destinations and can be fished with lure or fly from the long weekend in October through to the long weekend in June.  These Snowy Mountains rivers are well known for their excellent dry fly fishing in the summer months and the spawn run fishing can produce some huge brown and rainbow trout in the autumn months.  There are many public access points to these rivers as much of there length is in the Kosziusko National Park.  The Thredbo River can be accessed within 5 minutes of Alpine Habitats and our friendly management can put you on the right track with directions.  They might even be able to help you with some special information like what the trout are biting on.

Lake Jindabyne, Lake Eucumbene, Guthager Pondage and Island Bend are all impoundments that hold plenty of trout and can be fished all year round.  These lakes are also open to other methods of fishing including bait and trolling.  If you just want a relaxing fish without walking these are the places to go.  You can just throw in your lines and kick back and wait for the trout to bite.

Lake Jindabyne is less than 10 minutes from Alpine Habitats and once again our management will be happy to set you on the right track.

You can also get advice, bait and tackle from some of the local Snowy Mountains trout fishing stores.  High Country Outfitters (http://www NULL.highfly NULL.com NULL.au) are in Jindabyne and excellent for gear and local fishing advice.  Snowy Mountains Sports are also in Nuggets Crossing Shopping Centre in Jindabyne and have a fishing tackle store (http://www NULL.snowymountainsports NULL.com NULL.au/fishingGear NULL.html) as well as their ski and boarding gear.

Alpine Angler (http://www NULL.alpineangler NULL.com NULL.au)just south of Cooma have a large range of trout fishing gear so if you are your way from Sydney or Canberra this can be a good option.

If you are after a guide to help you on the rivers you could try Match the Hatch Snowy Mountains River Guide (http://matchthehatch NULL.com NULL.au) or Snowy Monaro Flyfishing. (http://snowymonaroflyfishing NULL.com NULL.au)

For a helpful guide fishing Lake Jindabyne, particularly trolling visit Steve Williamson’s Trout Fishing Adventures. (http://swtroutfishing NULL.com NULL.au)  Steve also has a fishing and marine shop at the junction of Alpine Way and Kosciuszko Road.

In November every year the Snowy Mountains hosts the Snowy Mountains Trout Festival (http://www NULL.troutfestival NULL.com)for a week.  Join up (http://troutfestival NULL.com/index NULL.cfm?pageName=entry_forms ), come and use Alpine Habitats as a base, have a ball catching trout and hopefully take home a prize.
