Take a drive up to Guthega in the summer. Explore Island Bend where there was a full settlement during construction of the Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme. The Guthega Alpine Inn (http://www NULL.guthega NULL.com/)is open year round for brunch and lunch. Take the link road back to Smiggin Holes then up past Perisher Ski Resort (http://www NULL.perisher NULL.com NULL.au/winter/index NULL.php)to Charoletts Pass. This is where the road used to continue to Mt Kosciuszko and you can walk to the summit from here. Part of this route is dirt road and can be rough but a four wheel drive is not required in dry weather. Parts are also closed during winter.
On the way home you could take a walk to Rainbow Lake or do the Waterfall Trail. The map of the trek is shown below.

Take a drive up past Thredbo Village and continue on the Alpine Way. The drive takes you over Dead Horse Gap at 1580m above sea level then you wind down to an elevation of 520m at Tom Groggin – a wonderful rest area beside the headwaters of the Murray River. It is the highest point on the Murray River accessible by car (other than 4WD). There are BBQ plates here and in warmer months the river is great for a swim. Closer to Thredbo, the Leatherbarrel Creek Rest area is another great spot. If you feel like driving futher, Geehi Rest area is further along the Alpine Way and the the Murray 1 power station visitors centre close to Khancoban. The map below shows the trip to the power station. You will pass the trail heads for the Dead Horse Gap and Cascade Hut walking trails.
